The exhibition ‘Smoking down to the filter’ is about desire, the desire for intense feelings, the desire to feel oneself, the desire to dance, to intoxicate oneself to excess.
And I paint what I see, what I felt. Observing, looking at, seeing others, dissecting the details of human sociology through our habits and our ‘costumes’ is the basis of my work.
My memories guide me, whether it’s Christmas Eve with Jean and Niko with lots of cocaine or going dancing at the KitKatClub. Painting is a kind of re-enactment of those intoxicating moments.
The intoxication and excess represent a pleasurable loss of control, which is welcome as a singular event that interrupts everyday life.
In my fast and colorful paintings, I try to capture the essence of the remembered scene.
