“Tropical the island breeze
All of nature wild and free
This is where I long to be
La isla bonita
And when the samba played
The sun would set so high
Ring through my ears and sting my eyes
Your Spanish lullaby“

When you think of an island the first associations are those of a beautiful place such as the Canary islands, Bali or Hawaii. These places have the connotation of a get-away place, relaxation and disconnection. A sense of adventure and exoticism lies in the air. But after actually having been there one knows that these places are in big parts spoiled by mass tourism and capitalistic greed. So after all the paradise has stains and the idyllic world we know e.g. from the paintings of Gaugin doesn’t exist anymore. Alcatraz and Nazino are islands too.
During the Nazino tragedy, that took place in 1933, 6700 prisoners were put on an island by the soviet government to construct a special settlement and ended up eating each other because of the lack of food. What these bodies of land surrounded by water have in common is that they always have been sources of stories, legends and desires. That’s also why seven German painters decided to do a show on this topic that generates so many ideas and clichés one can work with. It is therefore only natural that this show that joins different artistic approaches takes place on the beautiful island that is Ireland.
